Will it be Boy or Girl Baby for Britney?

WagerOnSports.com Releases Odds on Sex of Pop Diva's First Born & Her Wedding Date

Shortly following confirmation that she was engaged to her dancer boyfriend Kevin Federline, rumors began circulating that Britney Spears' engagement was the result of her pregnancy. With UK tabloid reports indicating that her first child is due in late December, WagerOnSports.com today announced odds on the sex of Britney Spears' first born and when the pop star and her fiancee will officially tie the knot.

The premium sports betting destination online, WagerOnSports.com has created betting options on whether Britney Spears' first child will be a boy or girl or if she'll have a "Baby One More Time" and deliver more than one baby. The odds that Spears first born child is either a boy or girl are at 10/11 (i.e., win $10 for every $11 bet). Meanwhile, the odds that the pop princess will give birth to twins, triplets or more the first time she goes into labor are a long shot at 20/1.

With reports also indicating that Spears would like to get married by November, WagerOnSports.com has created betting options on the pop star's wedding date. Despite the reports, WagerOnSports.com feels that Britney is unlikely to get married before Halloween and lists the odds on her tying the knot after October 31st at 1/6 odds. The odds that the diva and her fiancee will say their wedding vows before October 31st have been set at 4/1.

If Britney Spears is not pregnant by April 1, 2005, then all wagers on her children will be refunded. Any wagers posted after public knowledge of the sex of her first child or her marriage will be cancelled.

iTunes Countdown backdoor ruse

A loophole has been uncovered in Apple's iTunes Countdown competition that means people needn't buy a track.
The law states that all competitions must offer everyone an equal chance of winning – without having to pay anything, and Apple is abiding by this rule.
According to Engadget entering the competition without buying a track is simple. "Just select any album or song or whatever, and click the Tell a Friend button. Instead of telling a friend, put in the following email address itunes100@apple.com. Click send and you’re entered."
Apple even outlines this method of entry in the small print. It states: "You will automatically be entered into the Promotion by: 1) downloading a song from iTunes (any Free Download Single of the Week will be deemed an ineligible entry); or 2) a free alternative means of sending an email to Apple at itunes100@apple.com via the iTunes Tell a Friend feature (a song download or Tell a Friend email will be deemed an Entry(ies).

"The Tell a Friend feature can be easily accessed at iTunes by selecting a song, and clicking the Tell a Friend link that is displayed for that song. One Entry will be automatically submitted for each song downloaded or Tell a Friend email sent. The Promotion begins following the downloading of the 95,000,000th iTunes song, and ends with the downloading of the 100 millionth Entry (End Date). Only Entries submitted in this time period will be accepted."

'Sony is misleading consumers' - Apple

Apple is accusing Sony of misleading consumers with its claims that its new 20GB Walkman is able to hold more songs than the 40GB iPod.
Apple vice president of hardware product marketing Greg Joswiak told MacCentral: "We thought it was time to help set the record straight. We're disappointed that Sony has chosen to mislead folks with a marketing gimmick – we just want to make sure customer have the information so they can make an apples to apples comparison, if you will."
Joswiak explained that Sony's compression system ATRAC3 compresses songs at 48Kbps (kilobits per second) while Apple's compression system offers 128Kbps. "48Kbps is nowhere near CD quality," he claimed.
Joswiak also claimed that Apple has always based its song count on the nearest to CD-quality compression available. "If we played the same trick as Sony and took it down to 64kbps, you could say the 20GB iPod could hold 10,000 songs. You could take it down to 16kbps – which is the lowest available to us like 48kbps is the lowest available to Sony – and we could say it holds 40,000 songs. That's something we would never claim because that's just not something a customer would do."

In a final dig at Sony, Joswiak said: "Certainly there is a belief that great brands will portray this honestly, as we've tried to do. Again, it's a little disappointing that Sony has chosen to do otherwise."

Michael Moore welcomes piracy of his movie, Fahrenheit 9/11

Michael Moore has broken with the establishment once again by welcoming the appearance of pirated copies of his movie, Fahrenheit 9/11, on the Internet.

Moore says he is happy to see his movie – which original owners Disney chose not to distribute – reach anybody free of charge.

He told the Sunday Herald: “I don’t agree with the copyright laws and I don’t have a problem with people downloading the movie and sharing it with people as long as they’re not trying to make a profit off my labour. I would oppose that.

“I do well enough already and I made this film because I want the world to change. The more people who see it the better, so I’m happy this is happening.”

Movie moguls are unhappy at Moore's stance, the report claims, though the director said: "I think information, art and ideas should be shared."

New law 'could kill iPod'

USA Today reports that a congressional bill could threaten music-player makers such as Apple.
The Inducing Infringement of Copyrights Act aims to make operators of networks such as Kazaa and Grokster liable for their users’ copyright abuse, and also makes it easier for entertainment companies to sue technology firms in language "so broad it could apply to makers of MP3 players, such as iPods."

It could also theoretically be applied against media organizations that give consumers tips on using digital content, the report warns.

Google, Yahoo, Intel, eBay, Cnet and 37 other firms have signed a letter requesting hearings on this issue, as in the US such bills can pass into law without any hearing at all.

"The act could be used to challenge free speech, which would violate the First Amendment and is a significant concern to us as a media company," says Sharon LeDuy, general counsel of Cnet.

"We feel this bill adds potential liability to any innovator," says Don Whiteside of Intel's Corporate Technology Group. "We view this as a very significant change in the copyright law, and we're very concerned."

Military moves to Mac

Mac technology is becoming platform of choice among high-end developers and researchers in the sci-tech and military industries.

Apple previewed its forthcoming Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger last week at its Worldwide Developer's Conference (WWDC) event and the company's focus on open standards is a shot in the arm for the open-source community.

A blog entry by software development consultant Blane Warren claims that "several features have been driven largely by Apple's open-source participation".

Warren pays particular attention to Apple's introduction of software to support Rendezvous (zero-configuration) networking on Windows, Unix and Linux systems. This introduction means developers on other platforms will be able to introduce such features in their software and hardware products, and will also improve the ease of integration of Macs on mixed networks.

He writes: "I spoke with Michael Chute, lab manager with the US Naval Medical Research Center. Mr Chute is leading a team responsible for developing agents capable of identifying bio weapons in the environment, and additionally cultivating vaccines."

The Naval Medical Research Center is installing an Apple cluster for research purposes: "They chose Apple only because of the ease of use and ability to manage in a limited IT environment," Warren writes.

Jobs get the "This old House" Treatment

Apple CEO Steve Jobs is offering to give away his historic house – but there's a catch.

America's pre-eminent CEO has been locked in battle with planning officials in Woodside. Jobs has owned a $3.5 million mansion (460 Mountain Home Road) in Woodside for twenty years. He lived there with his sister for a while before he moved to Palo Alto, but thinks the house is a "dump" and wants to pull it down to build "a much smaller house for his family".
However, town planners have stamped a preservation order on the property, insisting Jobs respect the 1920s Mission Revival style house's historic and environmental value.

City planners met on June 16 to decide if Jobs would be allowed to demolish this old house.
During the meeting Jobs' attorney Howard Ellman told planning commissioners that Jobs would "not only be willing to give the house away, but that he might even contribute to the cost of removing it," according to The Almanac.

"Steve is perfectly prepared to cooperate with anyone who wants to take the house, and let it go for nothing," Mr. Ellman said. "He thinks it does not have any value."

Post.Office 3.6 & WEBmail 6 Two new mail packages for Mac OS X

Two new mail packages, Post.Office 3.6 and WEBmail 6,
are now available from Tenon for Mac OS X.
Both
Post.Office, the well-regarded mail server and list server widely used
around the world, and WEBmail, a web-based mail client developed by
EMUmail, have been significantly enhanced with feature updates.

Post.Office was recently extended with a plug-in architecture that makes
it easy to incorporate open source tools, such as SpamAssassin (a spam
detector). Now a new plug-in for virus scanning has been added. The
virus scanning plug-in uses the latest ClamAV, the popular,
muti-threaded virus scanner designed for mail attachment scanning, with
a virus database that is updated biweekly.

WEBmail 6 is an easy-to-use web mail client that can be hand-tailored
with your own logos, or even with your own look & feel. Like
Post.Office, it supports both POP and IMAP and multiple domains. It can
even be set up with multiple mail servers for failover support. And like
Post.Office, it also includes SPAM filtering and SMTP Authentication (to
ensure mail server open relay protection, while giving authorized users
world-wide access to the mail server).

The new WEBmail 6 has an integrated web calendar that lets you share
your calendar in a group environment to coordinate meetings. The
built-in calendar security lets you endow certain users with permission
to edit calendar events, while others have viewing privileges only.
Users can have multiple calendars, so you can keep your personal
calendar private and have public calendars for your various
organizations.

When Post.Office and WEBmail are used in conjunction with Tenon's iTools
(an Apache, DNS, and FTP management tool), both products have additional
features. iTools can generate graphical displays of the mail server
traffic patterns and the web-based mail client will run many times
faster by using FastCGI with iTools Apache 2.

Tenon sells Post.Office as a downloadable software package for
installation on Mac OS X desktops or as a turnkey server on a Panther
Xserve box. Post.Office is offered on a sliding scale, depending upon
how many mailboxes and mailing lists are needed.

For 10 accounts or less,
Post.Office is free! Post.Office customers on non-Mac platforms are
encouraged to call Tenon for analysis, support, and system upgrades.
Check the Tenon web site (http://www.tenon.com) for details, special
offers and upgrade pricing.

Diskology's Team up with SubRosaSoft To Create Disk Jockey Expander

Diskology has teamed up with Mac utility manufacturer SubRosaSoft to create the Disk
Jockey Expander. What's the significance? Let em briefly explain,

The Disk Jockey is a portable disk cloning tool that also lets you mirror,
span, compare, test and erase IDE hard disk drives using either a Mac or a
PC. Up until now, however, there has been a pretty signficant limitation for
Mac users. If you copied a smaller drive to a larger drive, let's say a 20
GB drive to a 160 GB drive, you would only see the 20 GB drive on the 160 GB
drive post-copy...you couldn't access the remaining 140 GB of space
remaining on the larger drive. This was a Mac-only problem. On the PC you
could rather easily re-assign the remaining 140 GB to a new partition.

SubRosaSoft has come to our rescue! We have worked with SubRosa to create
the Disk Jockey Expander Macintosh software utility. It is a subset of their
popular VolumeWorks software which allows you to run the program, select the
larger drive (that has the smaller drive copied to it), click one button and
reclaim the remaining 140 GB of space as a new partition.

? Support for custom folder icons.
? Better handling of file names with invalid characters. We now return an error code that lets the Finder ignore these files and finish copying other files.

? Fixed a minor bug that would cause some operational feedback to be lost if the Browser window was closed.

Sony takes aim at iPod with new hard disk Walkman

Sony Corp. has unveiled its first hard-disk drive-based digital music player to bear the Walkman name. The device was launched on Thursday as the Walkman brand marked its 25th anniversary. The NW-HD1 features a 20GB hard-disk drive and is, according to the company, the smallest music player at this capacity. It measures 89 millimeters by 62.1 millimeters by 13.8 millimeters and weighs 110 grams. The capacity is half that of Apple Computer Inc.'s highest capacity iPod, but Sony says its player trumps Apple's in terms of the number of songs it can store: 13,000 on the Walkman versus 10,000 on the iPod.

Apple confirms new iMacs are coming in September

Apple on Thursday confirmed that a new iMac is on the way, but stopped short of providing any details about the new system. The company's online store has stopped accepting orders for the current flat panel models, but Apple doesn't plan to have a replacement ready until September -- the victim of "less than perfect" planning, by its own admission.
