Macs cheaper than PCs (we knew we see the day..)

Apple kicks off Dashboard Widget contest

The Apple Developer Connection (ADC) has launched the Dashboard Widget Contest.
"This is a terrific opportunity to begin developing Widgets for Tiger and to receive recognition for your work.
Entries will be judged on technical excellence, innovation, and ease of use.

The developer of the winning Widget will receive public recognition along with an Apple 40GB iPod.
The contest is open exclusively to Apple Developer Connection members whose memberships include
access to pre-release versions of Mac OS X v10.4 Tiger.
Submissions must be made between November 5 and November 30, 2004.

Apple outlines mobile strategy at CTIA conference

Apple's Senior Director of Product Marketing for QuickTime and Graphics, Frank Casanova, recently gave a feature presentation at the CTIA Wireless I.T. & Entertainment 2004 conference in San Francisco, Calif. Apple has now posted Casanova's presentation online in QuickTime and MPEG-4 format. Casanova's presentation provides illumination about Apple's strategy for winning a place in the burgeoning mobile multimedia marketplace as a core provider of software and hardware services to content providers, content delivery companies and handset makers.

Macworld Boston moves to new venue

IDG World Expo on Friday announced that Macworld Boston, which returned to Massachusetts last year, would be leaving the new Boston Convention & Exhibition Center (BCEC) in favor of the Hynes Convention Center for the 2005 summer show. Show organizers cite venue size as the main reason for moving the event.

Apple releases Mac OS X, OS X Server v10.3.6

Apple on Friday released Mac OS X v10.3.6, an upgrade that offers improvements in several areas of the operating system, including added compatibility with FireWire audio and USB devices; updates to the Calculator, DVD Player, Image Capture and Safari applications; improved OpenGL video technology, along with updated ATI and NVIDIA drivers; improved file sharing in Mac (AFP), UNIX (NFS) and PC (SMB/CFIS) networks as well as more reliable network auto-mounting and launching of network applications; and more. You can find this 14MB download by running Software Update in System Preferences or by visiting a page in Apple's Knowledge Base that links to the stand-alone installer.

Apple posts DVD Studio Pro 3.0.2

Apple also on Friday released DVD Studio Pro 3.0.2, an update to its pro-level DVD authoring application that offers compatibility for double-layer media on computers that support it as well as general stability improvements. Registered users can download it free from the DVD Studio Pro 3 update page by entering their serial number.

DVD Studio Pro v3.0.2 released by Apple

Apple has released a free update for DVD Studio Pro.

The update to version 3.0.2 includes compatibility for double-layer media on supported systems, as well as improved general stability.

DVD Studio Pro requires Mac OS X 10.3.2 or later; QuickTime 6.5 or later; a 733Mhz or faster Power Mac G4 with AGP card; 8MB of video memory (32MB is recommended); 256GB of RAM (512MB is recommended): 4.4GB of free hard disk space; and a SuperDrive or DVD-R recorder.

The 3.0.2 update is free to registered users of 3.0.

Apple today released Mac OS X 10.3.6, which is available for download via the Software Update preference pane. According to Apple, the update delivers "enhanced functionality and improved reliability for Mac OS X 10.3 (Panther) and is recommended for all users."

In addition to all previous standalone security updates, key enhancements include: improved file sharing for Mac (AFP), UNIX (NFS) and PC (SMB/CIFS) networks; more reliable network automounts and launch of network applications; improved OpenGL technology and updated ATI and NVIDIA graphic drivers; additional FireWire audio and USB device compatibility; updated Calculator, DVD Player, Image Capture, and Safari applications; and improved compatibility for third party applications.
