Pangea releases payroll processing app

Pangea Software today released a freeware payroll processing application along with its source code. The new application, called Pangea Payroll, is designed to help small businesses track federal payroll tax payments for their employees. "It started out as an in-house tool, but it’s such a useful thing to have that the decision was made to release it publicly as freeware, and to include the source code with the download," the developer said.

Maya 6.5 Now Shipping

Alias announced today that it has begun shipping Maya 6.5 worldwide. The new version is equipped to handle larger datasets through speed improvements and new management tool and the new mental ray for Maya Satellite rendering allows network rendering across multiple CPU's for interactive and batch rendering, including use of mental ray for pre-lighting.

WWDC 2005 Dates Announced

Apple stores alter iPod mini availability, refresh imminent

Corroborating recent reports which hint at an iPod mini refresh as early as next week, several tipsters note that on Wednesday international versions of Apple's online store abruptly extended their estimated ship times for all iPod mini models. The company's online stores in the United Kingdom and France now reflect wait times of 8 days for all iPod mini models. The stores had previously conformed to Apple's US-based online store availability estimates, which imply the players will ship the same business day. Similarly, in the days prior to Apple's latest PowerBook G4 updates, the Apple online store suddenly extended estimated ship times for all PowerBook models from the same business day to 8 days.That is according to Appleinsinder.

Apple agrees to hold subpoenas against Mac sites

eWeek reports that Apple will stay subpoenas seeking information about unnamed individuals who allegedly leaked trade secrets in its civil complaint against two Mac Web sites. "Annalee Newitz, a policy analyst for the Electronic Frontier Foundation, said that Apple, which is represented by the San Francisco law firm of O'Melveny and Myers LLP, has agreed to hold off on serving subpoenas until after the Superior Court of Santa Clara County, California, has held a hearing on the EFF's request for a protective order for its clients, two of the Web sites listed in Apple's suit. EFF filed the request this week; a date for the hearing has not yet been set, but it may be held in early March.

Apple to add high-density display option to PowerBooks?

Apple Computer may be planning to offer PowerBooks with higher density displays, and may have intended to do so with its latest PowerBook offerings, according to AppleInsider.

Panic releases Transmit 3 FTP client for Mac OS X

Panic on Wednesday announced the release of Transmit 3, the latest version of the company's File Transfer Protocol (FTP) client for Mac OS X, unveiled at Macworld Conference & Expo in San Francisco earlier this year. Transmit 3 adds new features, including a column view, tabs for multiple connections, a "sidebar" reminiscent of the Finder, a redesigned Favorites feature, new preview drawer and much more, including full iDisk and WebDAV support that Panic claims is faster than the Finder.

Motorola denies iTunes phone reports

Motorola Inc. has Wednesday refuted reports that it demonstrated its hotly-anticipated iTunes mobile phone earlier this week. Appearing at the 3GSM World Congress in Cannes, Motorola demonstrated several new devices, including the E1060. The latter product was widely described as the new iTunes-compatible mobile phone.

Rollei returns to U.S. with new digital cameras

German company Rollei, which suffered several setbacks in recent years, on Wednesday announced its return to the U.S. market with five new digital cameras that will debut at next week's Photo Marketing Association (PMA) trade show in Orlando. The company will introduce a new top-of-the-line camera, the 16-megapixel 6008 AF, which is compatible with all of Rollei's 6000 series AF lenses. It can be used with traditional film or with a SmartMedia storage card. Rollei's Web site uses frames, so access the company's medium format camera section and select the digital bundle at the top of the list, not the 6008 AF by itself, to see all the specs. Rollei expects to ship the camera later this month.
